I hope Apple adds translation and Wolfram Alpha to the Siri thing. I'd love to get an answer without typing when I say "Translate in French: Where are you studying now?" or "Solve 1.52 times 8.38?"

WTF? Is this the thing about the 12" BP and 12/14" iB batteries they've had on their website for 400 years?

Here's a few quick ones.
NATO still musters formidable military capability when the US contribution is excluded. I don't think it's fair to say that "the US -is- the NATO military", even if we are the biggest component.

Loving the detail in these pictures and the others you have been posting from this museum trip. I assume it's a museum of some sort and that it was all in the same trip at least...
Yes, it is the Fernbank Museum in Atlanta, GA. They allow photography as long as you don't try to make money from it. They had no problem with me bringing in my tripod, either, which allowed me to get the long exposures necessary for these pictures.
Today's image should be familiar to everyone. My problem was figuring out how to frame this shot. The unicorn was too big to get the whole thing, and there were too many people around to try to get it isolated without people. The horn was over 3' long, so I was forced to let it get cut off if I wanted to show anything up close on the rest of it. Since I have a membership at the museum I may go back and try some other angles to see what else I can do with it.
There was also a dragon, but I flubbed the shot because it came out blurry when I got home and looked at it. I guess I moved the camera a little, and I was in a hurry because people were trying to get past, so I only took one pass at it.

Interesting discussion...
Do those in the anti-piracy camp have major issues with someone who pirates Adobe products, but doesn't "profit" from them?....i.e doesn't make even enough money to cover the costs of the original products or even makes zero dollars?
I remember having to take out a significant loan for my first computer. I might as well have bought a ferrari and left it on blocks in my driveway because I couldn't afford any software. Boy was I disappointed
Personally, I think access to opportunity thru education is critical to a functioning societyI don't think it's reasonable for underprivlidged students to have to learn photoshop from a 'trial' version ( not every middle school or highschool in the country has access to these tools.
If buying the software legally represented a financial hardship (as it once did for me) you can easily find yourself resenting not only the people who don't pay for software but the software company itself for not placing a fair value on your solicitude (support issues, bug fixes, exhorbitant upgrade fees).
...prices should be fair, as long as prices ain't fair there can't be fairplay in the game
I fully agree with the concept of a fair playing field. Maybe the middle ground is going to be found in the cloud, but I doubt it.

1. This is kind of scary - it's like Apple is saying whatever you decide you WILL get our products.
2. Also, wife may have been pissed.
3. Is true?
But I like the headline!

The iPhone 5 will not be released until 2012. The next iPhone will be called the iPhone 4G.
Until then, any self-respecting journalist should refer to it as "the fifth-generation iPhone."
And your rock solid PROOF that the iPhone 5 will not be released till 2012 is what?

They're going to broaden the span of the MB.
The top end spec will be increased probably with core 2 duo, more RAM and disk, bringing it closer to low end MBP but maintaining the price point. Probably keeping it black.
The bottom end will stay the same with core duo at a lower price.
Why this?
Well a reseller telles me 'what people want' is a 13 inch MBP and this would create something similar but far enough away to justify the price difference.
The MB has not really filled the niche of the 12 inch Powerbook yet.
And the delay for delivery for top end black MBs has gone up but not for the bottom end (I know this might just be a supply thing) in Australia.
I don't think so. The C2D and CD are at the same price now, with the possibility that the CD's price will go up in the future. Apple would switch over now and maintain the same board across black/white macbooks.

It's one of my biggest pet peeves, and yes I do get mad at friends for saying "that's so gay" and guess what...none of them say it anymore.
you're that annoying friend that shows up at a party and everyone has to be nice to him, and then as soon as you leave everyone talks about how abrasive you are.
that is the worst kind of friend.

On a related note, isn't it a bit weird Apple hasn't announced any sales figures yet? They're usually quick to brag when devices hit a million sales in a short amount of time.
I've been wondering about this as well. I wonder if they're avoiding such announcements until either 1). the international launches are complete, or 2). they don't want any negative press backlash about these supply chain "issues." I think the numbers will be huge.

Just because some are successful does not mean all can be. There is plenty of racism still around in most countries, and yes it does effect the less off more than those that are well off.
Because Blacks are not all the same. You cant lump people of one race all in one group and expect them to all to have the same results. There is a history in the US of racism that still effects many black Americans. Many black Americans can't afford to go to college for example. Poverty is a vicious cycle that preys on its self.
Because some are successful does not mean all can be? That's crap. I'm not lumping them into one group, i'm saying their race has a disproportionate amount of poverty compared to others. And we're not even talking about the US, this thread is about Britain. Many blacks in Britain are immigrants, unlike in the US. So they have no history of anything there.

Nope, desktop chip.
we don't know that yet.
The ATI X1600 in the "old" iMac is a mobile chip. And an UNDERCLOCKED one.
Damn it, I wanted a Conroe iMac... I wonder how different they are from the Merom performance wise?
BTW, Vesa mount is back with the 24" model.
It's pretty clear why the added the Firewire 800 port ot the iMac: Time Machine requires an external hard drive. And it would be best if it was a pretty darn fast one, as well.

I cant see this really happening...the 3DS has been selling far below expectations at retail and didn't even make its numbers for shipped units. While there is a segment that seems to like 3d, it seems the far larger majority just doesn't care for it. I know that unless it was able to be turned off with no effect on the viewing angle or image quality I wouldn't buy one.

all this beaming vs using the ear buds (yours or theirs) reminds me of the great expense NASA went to make a pen that works in space and Zero G. as compared the Russians who used a pencil
That would even be a better story if it was true. It ain't (http://history.nasa.gov/spacepen.html).

OK, but can they transmit directly to the receiver in my tooth?
Depends. What colour is your tooth?

Is that possible? You're booting from an external and applying the firmware update to your mac right?
Yes... I had bought a 160gb drive to replace the 60gb that my MacBook came with. After installing the new drive, I put the old 60gb into an external USB SATA enclosure. However, since I was about to meet a tech at the local genius bar, I swapped out my upgrades (the 160gb HD and 2gb RAM) to the hardware my MacBook originally came with (60gb and 512mb RAM).
Long story short, I booted up my external HD - now running my 160gb HD - and installed the firmware update to that drive. Note that keeping the option key down upon reboot after installing from the firmware pkg won't work. You install the pkg, have it reboot, and let it run (you'll see a progress bar). Once the progress bar finishes, your MacBook will reboot again. At this point, keep down the option key to boot from the external drive.
BTW I've been running my MacBook at full tilt (using the random shutdown test tool) for > 30-40 minutes and not a shutdown in sight. I've also put my MacBook to sleep and it awakens fine. Looks like this update has fixed the random shutdown issue for me. One word: AWESOME! :D

imho the reason why apple hasnt filled the void of a 12"powerbook equivilent is because they plan on expanding their overall product range. more portable notebooks, tablets, etc. all in the scope of vision
This thread has, to the best of my knowledge, managed to stay tablet free up until now...thanks for contaminating a great thread with pie in the sky. :D
I agree, however, that for Apple to gain a faster growth of market share gain, they will need to continue to expand their various lines.
eg. 24" iMac: Did anyone really believe that that one would become a reality? (don't answer that...it is a redundant question).
